On the electric field at the tip of dart leaders in lightning flashes
نویسندگان
چکیده
The results obtained in this study show that as the dart leader tip passes a given point on the defunct return stroke channel the electric field increases within a fraction of a microsecond to values larger than the critical electric field necessary for the initiation of cold electron runaway in low-density air comprising the channel. These results are in support of the hypothesis that cold runaway electron breakdown may play a role in the emission of X-ray bursts by dart leaders. The calculations also show that the peak power dissipated by a typical dart leader is about 300–500MW/m and the energy dissipated within the first 10ms or so is about 500–600 J/m. Furthermore, the minimum resistance and the maximum radius of the core of a typical dart leader are estimated to be about 3O/m and 0.003m, respectively. & 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

On the mechanism of X-ray production by dart leaders of lightning flashes
Radiation with energies up to about 250 keV associated with the dart leader phase of rocket-triggered lightning were reported by Dwyer et al. (2004). The mechanism of X-ray generation by dart leaders, however, is unknown at present. Recently, Cooray et al. (2009a) developed physical concepts and mathematical techniques necessary to calculate the electric field associated with the tip of dart le...
متن کاملRegular Pulse Trains in Chaotic pulse Bursts
Electric field pulse bursts generated by lightning flashes are considered as sources of high radio frequencies. In this study, an analysis of pulse bursts in electric field records of 30 negative cloud to ground lightning flashes recorded in the southern coastal area of Sri Lanka is presented. Sixty-four percent (64%) of pulse bursts are typical chaotic pulse trains (CPT). Twenty-four percent (...
متن کاملImaging lightning intracloud initial stepped leaders by low-frequency interferometric lightning mapping array
By comparing the source position of pulses during initial leaders and the paths of subsequent dart leaders from typical bilevel intracloud (IC) flashes, we demonstrate a new method to image the detailed three-dimensional (3-D) structure and stepping dynamics of IC initial leaders. Using this approach, we show that nearly half of the initial breakdown pulses are not involved in the main channel ...
متن کاملCutoff and reestablishment of current in rocket-triggered lightning
[1] A total of three negative rocket-triggered lightning flashes without return strokes (two from 1997 and one from 1993) are analyzed in this paper in order to study the processes associated with the disintegration of the triggering wire and its replacement by an airplasma channel. It appears that the gap resulting from the vaporization of the triggering wire by the upward-positive leader curr...
متن کاملConstraints to do realistic modeling of the electric field ahead of the tip of a lightning leader
Several computer models exist to explain the observation of terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs). Some of these models estimate the electric field ahead of lightning leaders and its effects on electron acceleration and multiplication. In this paper, we derive a new set of constraints to do more realistic modeling. We determine initial conditions based on in situ measurements of electric field a...
